Fr. Brendan Hally
It is with great sadness that we learned that Fr. Brendan Hally C.S.Sp. passed away on 21 December 2025 at the age of 85, with the funeral mass taking place in Blackrock College Chapel on 24 December 2025.
Fr. Hally first joined the Spiritan Novitiate in Kilshane in 1959 and was ordained in 1967. He obtained a BA in Philosophy and HDipEd and was a Prefect in Rockwell College from 1962 to 1964, before moving to Blackrock College in 1971. He returned to Rockwell College and served as Headmaster from 1972 to 1980 before becoming Principal in Blackrock College in 1980 as well as being Provincial Counsellor for Education (1980-1983). He served as Dublin Superior / College President (1983-1988) and again from 1995-1998. In the period from 1988 – 1994, he was First Assistant to the Provincial of the Spiritans. In 1999 he returned to Rockwell College and served as Chaplain to the school until 2013. He also acted as Gamesmaster in Rockwell College, where he coached rugby and athletics, and was a Trustee Nominee to the Board of Management. In January 2014, Fr Hally moved to St. Dunstan's Parish, Millbrae, California before returning to Ireland in 2022.
Fr. Hally represented the very best of the Spiritan tradition of providing a holistic education, emphasising participation in sports and volunteerism as well as academic excellence, and encouraging every student to find and develop their particular aptitude.
He was recognised by the Union as Person of the Year in 2015 and was also inducted as Honorary Member of the Union.
Our sincere condolences to Fr. Hally’s family and Spiritan confreres. May he rest in peace.
